Open Source Summit Japan 2023

This study proposes a shift from qualitative to quantitative approach in Sony's Open Source Program Office (OSPO) to encourage engineers' contribution to open source projects. Sony operates in diverse technology areas, resulting in varying views on open source across different businesses due to industry, culture, and software development styles. Some business units have limited understanding of contribution value. To address this, we analyzed GitHub data to quantify contribution value. We visualized the contributors and business value of the projects contributed by Sony’s developers. Additionally, we examined notable companies and technology fields outside Sony, identifying cases where open source contributions brought business value. We presented quantitative findings to executives, leading to increased interest in open source and starting integration of open source activities into business plans. This quantitative approach aims to provide concrete evidence of open source value, persuade engineers and managers, and drive change within Sony. In conclusion, the proposed quantitative approach has generated positive outcomes, fostering interest in open source and its strategic inclusion in business plans. This study contributes to a better understanding of open source contribution value and its impact on the business plan.
