Industrial DevOps, Applying DevOps to Cyber-Physical Safety-Critical Systems - Robin Yeman, Carnegie Mellon Software Engineering Institute

We recently published a book through IT Revolution entitled “Industrial DevOps” which describes approaches to applying DevOps Principles and practices at the system level in highly regulated environments. It is assumed that DevOps encompasses both security and safety. During my time as a senior technical engineering fellow at Lockheed Martin I have had the opportunity to build a range of systems from submarines to satellites. Throughout my career I have seen there is a need to elevate DevOps implementation beyond software to the system level for cyber-physical safety-critical systems in sectors such as healthcare, automotive, aerospace, and energy. Each of these industries has stringent compliance and safety standards which require rigorous verification and validation to ensure system reliability and safety. However, current methodologies often lack sufficient mechanisms for establishing bi-directional traceability required between high-level system requirements, models, source code, and testing evidence. Closing this gap in traceability allows us the ability to obtain the speed, adaptability, and quality of DevOps practices safely for cyber-physical systems. This presentation outlines the challenges for cyber-physical safety-critical systems and approaches being leveraged in industry that combine multiple bodies of knowledge to resolve the gap.
